Partnership Launches Learning ForumsYour School Wellness Policy: The Next Step The Partnership is hosting a school wellness learning forum as a series of conference calls in January through May, 2012.
The first was on School Nutrition in January. The participants included superintendents and other adminstrators, directors of school health services, nurse leaders, directors of food services, a school committee member, and MA Department of Public Health nutrition specialists. Offering healthy and delicious food in schools and educating students, parents, and staff about nutrition and healthy cooking was the focus. Representatives of Safe Routes to School, Fuel Up to Play 60, and a State Recreation Department as well as seven school districts participated. Many suggestions were given on how to get students - and staff, parents, and community - moving. School Wellness Committees was the topic of the third forum. Speakers from the MA Department of Public Health and MA Department of Elementary and Secondard Education discussed the State Standards for School Wellness Advisory Committees and the Federal Child Nutrition Reauthorization of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, which goes into effect in August 2012. Representatives of schools with active and successful wellness committee also spoke. The discussion group included school administrators, nurses, nutrition specialists, and health and wellness coordinators and educators. All the speakers and other participants have experience in writing successful grants proposals; several also have experience in reading and evaluating proposals. Useful advice was exchanged.
